Seeking Its Voice

Norman Lindsay lived a long and productive life, developing a style that is instantly recognizable as his. But early on, his work was seeking its 'voice', as all artists' work must go through. This Lindsay illustration is from 1914.

Finding your artistic "voice" is tough. It's funny (and at the same time encouraging) to see artist's earlier works done when they're still cribbing from other artists to try to find their own style. Here it looks like Lindsay is trying to emulate N. C. Wyeth.

The same could be said for Wyeth, I own a book of Lindsay WW1 cartoons and his(Lindsay)depiction of old kaiser bill from 1914 seem to be emulated by Wyeth in 1917/18
