A truely great drawing! I do feel obligated to correct the facts regarding where this was published and what it depicts...I can only assume this is scanned from the Vanguard book (which is riddled with mistakes) on Krenkel and it is incorrectly attributed as being published in The Road to Azrael which it isn't! I have that book open in front of me and it isn't printed there-in...besides that it's obvious that Roy created this illustration in 1962 (it's dated) and the Howard book wasn't published until 1979 using all new illustrations. It absolutely depicts a scene of ERB'SBarsoom, I believe it's Thuvia and not Deja Thoris!
Mr. Door Tree, I was expecting your correction, as I had my doubts regarding Vanguard's data. I sold my copy of Azrael several years ago and didn't remember this great drawing being in there. But I thought oh well, it's just an old man's memory gone bad. But I looked at those two moons and thought, hmm, ERB. But I trusted the damn book's caption. Yes, that would appear to be Thuvia.
Wow! What's this illustration from, Thom? It looks Barsoomish, but too much vegitation. Venus?
ReplyDeleteThis is originally from Robert E. Howard's Road of Azrael, the limited edition published by Donald M. Grant. This is penultimate Krenkel.
