Mike Mignola's artwork fascinates me. Mannered and stylized with heavy ink spotting, it has a graphic impact that endures. I only hope that Hellboy isn't his magnum opus.
This frenetic panel of Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser from 1990 is a beautiful example of his finest work.
I appreciate your appreciation of Mignola. He's got something unique and ultimately significant going on is his work. I've enjoyed witnessing his progress as an artist (and writer).
ReplyDeleteHe doesn't really do anything but write now. I quit buying Hellboy when he stopped doing the art... which was some time ago.
ReplyDeleteI've enjoyed Duncan Fegrado's take on HB fwiw -but that's a matter of taste. I do know though that Mike has new material that he is drawing (non HB) for release in the near future.
ReplyDeleteScrew on Head is his magnum opus. A delight to read and look at.
ReplyDeleteAlso love his Fafhrd stuff too. And you posted a great great piece from that era.
Well, all right,Thom! I love Mignola and I love Fritz Lieber's Fafhrd and Gray Mouser stories.
ReplyDeleteDid you see the cover illustrations that Mignola did a few years ago for the White Wolf publishing editions of Lieber's collected Newhon stories?
I posted about them myself last year.
