Bolton's Goblin Market

Paul Ballard, a terrific illustrator in his own right, took the time to send over these scans of John Bolton's graphic story version of Goblin Market — in response to the earlier posts of Arthur Rackham and Kinuko Craft's versions.

Paul sez in his email: Too beautiful not to share . . .

too beautiful, indeed. I'm guessing this is pretty old, yeah? Bolton hasn't produced anything anywhere near as lovely as this in a loooong time. cheers, Thomas. and cheers to you, too, Paul!

Cheers Joe. I believe this story first ran in Pathways to Fantasy #1, which was 1984.

The incest theme is really apparent in the original poem by Christina Rosetti:

"She cried "Laura," up the garden,
"Did you miss me ?
Come and kiss me.
Never mind my bruises,
Hug me, kiss me, suck my juices
Squeezed from goblin fruits for you,
Goblin pulp and goblin dew.
Eat me, drink me, love me;
Laura, make much of me:
For your sake I have braved the glen
And had to do with goblin merchant men."
