I always enjoy art that surprises, like the figures forming a tower, making the wave rise higher. The woman, to me, does not look forlorn, so much as immersed. It adds to the experience of the painting, and together, they are making me want to read and view it over and over, much like a poem, to decipher the meaning, and absorb the layers.
