Loyal to Apple

Well, this just takes the cake. I haven't been this long without a computer since I got my first Amiga during the first Gulf War (anybody remember 'scuds'?). I was going to fill this lull with an essay I've been yearning to write, but it's so overwhelming typing the words letter by letter, hunt and peck style, as I need to on this iPad.

When I do finally get my beloved Mac back, I'll be scurrying to get back to the deadlines that I've somehow put in stasis, thanks to the gracious good will of my clients.

I miss having y'all popping in! I truly will try to make up for my absence.

Even though my machine went awry, and is so long in returning to me, I'm still loyal to Apple products, and always will be.

  1. Although there are going to be problems,over-all Apple personal computers are characterized by highly dependable hardware and a stable, reliable operating system. They're not at all my cup of tea because of the interface (hardware and software), but I have recommended them for my parents. (Who struggle because my father resists walking away from Windows.)

None-the-less, while there's a case for anathematizing some brands to the point of offering them no means of recovery, I can't see that brand loyalty makes sense except so long as the brand out-performs others by one's measures. I hope that Apple always does that for you, but I hope that you'll move on if they ever stop.

In any case, I'm missing your usual sort of entries, but you have nothing to make up to us because you don't owe us; and I'm sure that the vast majority of us will be here to celebrate the return of those entries.

The exception will be Little Timmy, whose last words were “Oh, I wish Mr Buchanan's 'blog were….” It was very sad.

  2. I had an amiga or two back in the day and got to see the patriot missiles that were being used to defend against scuds. :^)

Do you back up your mac? Would it have been easier to buy a new drive and restore to that?

  3. I know the feeling of a downed Mac. My first one was a Mac Plus 1986...never used a PC...Gary

  4. Hi Daniel,

Indeed, when I'm loyal to a brand, a person, a cause, or a country, it's because my loyalty has been earned. I can get really mad at any of those entities, if they have behaved erratically, but unless they have turned their back on me, I will defend their back through times of strife.

In my mind, Mac is a right-brain product, in a world of left-brain dominance. The world needs more people like Steve Jobs was.

  5. Hi Sean,

It sounds like you have had some personal experience in The Gulf. I was merely glued to the teevee.

Oh yes, everything was and is backed up, or I'd be running out into four lanes of traffic. And it was the hard drive being replaced. I got the machine back and started to restore, when the original problem reared its ugly head and then needed to go back to the geniuses, where it's been a head-scratcher ever since.

  6. Hi Gary,

I have used PC, thus it's first hand experience that makes me loyal to Apple.

  7. Ah, I see, Thomas. That is a pain in the arse! Good luck with it.

FWIW, I was on Mac after the amiga then had around a 17 year hiatus from Apple. Been back on for about a year and am enjoying the quality of MBP.
