My Favorite Nick Cardy Cover

It's amazing how comic book covers have memories embedded within them. That is to say, seeing a certain comic cover will trigger a specific memory, usually of the first time I saw it.

When I see this cover, I remember 40 years ago, trudging through a numbing blizzard, at night, to a drug store (on Colfax Avenue), to buy some medicine for my mom who was ill in bed. Passing the comic spinner, I remember doing a classic double take when this comic caught my eye. I bought it and a few other DCs (that I don't remember at all) and made my way back home, chilled to the bone. After attending to my mom's needs, I settled down to the comics, saving this one for the last. Now cozy and comfortable, this cover and its situation seemed all the more chilling, having just come in from the cold, thankful I didn't have to hide from passing warriors.

It's actually a warm memory.

Cool! I'm already on record as saying that this is one of my all-time top ten favorite covers! In fact, if not for the little girl's weird eyes, it might make number one!

I did not know that, about your list. Yes, Cardy's female eyes seemed to fall in two categories, beautiful or weird.

About Me

My Photo
Thomas Haller Buchanan
My name is Thom Buchanan. I'm an artist and photographer. People are my favorite subjects to portray in art and photos. My wife (and studio partner) has called that my 'people skills', as I've been passionately creating portrait studies for many years. I refer to myself as a pictorialist, as I don't limit myself in the process of how an image is made. Images are my life.

I intend to share many of my pictorial treasures, some not terribly rare, but terribly meaningful to me. I like to zoom in on details along the way and share what has inspired me in my career as an artist. And I would like to examine the value of pictorial images, not in terms of money, but in degrees of imagination.

I refer to myself as a pictorialist, not just in my set of skills, but in my lifelong appreciation of the skills and talents of artists, illustrators, cartoonists, sculptors, photographers, typographers, and graphic designers. I'd like to share that appreciation with anyone who stumbles into my little world.

It's a good little world!
