Wood's work got us. Before I ever heard of Milton Caniff, Wood communicated the exotic flavor of the strip he parodied. His detail,  and use of shadow, kept my eyes glued to the page.

And the women caught my prepubescent fancy...

And years later I recognized where he learned to hit just the right curves of the their legs: Alex Raymond's early Dale Arden, emulating the style, but making it his own, as we'll see later from his other parodies.
I read recently on one of the comics blogs that the guy considered Wood to be one of the worst artists of the medium, based I guess on classical standards, what with wooden poses and such. Well, he's crazy, Wood's middle period of work was perfection...
