Graphic Memories of the 50s
My graphic memories of the 50's were funny animals and Mad. This Mad was the earliest one that my brother had, that I know of. He would have been 10 years old, I would have been 4. Wally Wood of course did the little guys down on the lower portion. Wood was so adept that he could emulate other artists' styles—to the point that he could have taken over any strip, not that he should have. Later on, of course, he did do a bit on the actual Prince Valiant. He was so good—lots more Wood to come. When I read this stuff as a young boy, I enjoyed the art, but only now REALLY appreciate the attention to detail these guys had. There's all kinds of little jokes that you've got to move in close to see. For example, Pluto as a dog-skin rug. etc etc. The comic strip piece is not from the issue shown as a cover. More Mad stuff to come.
