In Search of Hophead Magic

There was a lot of music in Pogo, more so than most any other comic strip, usually with wild abandon. Many of the lyrics made sense by not making sense, a carry-over from Kelly's comic book Mother Goose doggerel lines of verse. He was taking on folk singers here, blending beatniks with the early hippies, this being 1964. I myself remember at that time singing along with Peter, Paul & Mary singing 'this land is your land, this land is my land'. And of course this was the time of the four Weevils, um, I mean Beatles.

The cast was always making music. Here from Songs of the Pogo, Churchy plays a mean violin:

About Me

My Photo
Thomas Haller Buchanan
My name is Thom Buchanan. I'm an artist and photographer. People are my favorite subjects to portray in art and photos. My wife (and studio partner) has called that my 'people skills', as I've been passionately creating portrait studies for many years. I refer to myself as a pictorialist, as I don't limit myself in the process of how an image is made. Images are my life.
View my complete profile
I intend to share many of my pictorial treasures, some not terribly rare, but terribly meaningful to me. I like to zoom in on details along the way and share what has inspired me in my career as an artist. And I would like to examine the value of pictorial images, not in terms of money, but in degrees of imagination.

I refer to myself as a pictorialist, not just in my set of skills, but in my lifelong appreciation of the skills and talents of artists, illustrators, cartoonists, sculptors, photographers, typographers, and graphic designers. I'd like to share that appreciation with anyone who stumbles into my little world.

It's a good little world!
