In Search of Hophead Magic
There was a lot of music in Pogo, more so than most any other comic strip, usually with wild abandon. Many of the lyrics made sense by not making sense, a carry-over from Kelly's comic book Mother Goose doggerel lines of verse. He was taking on folk singers here, blending beatniks with the early hippies, this being 1964. I myself remember at that time singing along with Peter, Paul & Mary singing 'this land is your land, this land is my land'. And of course this was the time of the four Weevils, um, I mean Beatles.
The cast was always making music. Here from Songs of the Pogo, Churchy plays a mean violin:
