That first cover is actually May 1951; they're not both 1949.
I'm lucky enough to have about 20 issues of Startling; including both these issues. Just some wonderfully fun pulp reading & art! The 51 issue has the last Captain Future story; while the 49 features a rare Science Fiction story by John D. MacDonald.

My name is Thom Buchanan.
I'm an artist and photographer.
People are my favorite subjects to portray in art and photos. My wife (and studio partner) has called that my 'people skills', as I've been passionately creating portrait studies for many years.
I refer to myself as a pictorialist, a combination of image-making and journalist. Images are my life.

Yeah, that angled spaceship on the first cover looks a good deal more "manly" than the chap on the second.
Startling stories is one of my all-time favourite pulp magazines, though

That was a typo on my part, I'm just so tired. But you can see on the file name for it that I knew the facts at some point.
I've had many issues of Startling pass through my hands over the years. As you say, great fun.
I always loved the bikinis...
Outer space bikinis ARE the vest!
