Back when Heavy Metal was THE magazine to be in! My very first published job was the cover to the June 78 issue when I was 17 (and Howard's assistant).
This Chris Moore's picture (along with Soroyama's works) was one of the main influences behind groundbreaking 1985 commercial 'Sexy Robot': http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eedXpclrKCc
I just finished looking through all your previous blog posts. Just wanted to say this is an amazing collection of images you've assembled. Love the travel posters. Hope you keep it going.
I became Chaykin's assistant in Dec '77 and a couple of months later he sent me up to the Heavy Metal offices with the the three sample paintings I had done the summer I graduated high school. They bought that piece for a cover and commissioned a couple more for the 79 calendar and the Nov 79 cover. I got lucky early! lol

My name is Thom Buchanan.
I'm an artist and photographer.
People are my favorite subjects to portray in art and photos. My wife (and studio partner) has called that my 'people skills', as I've been passionately creating portrait studies for many years.
I refer to myself as a pictorialist, a combination of image-making and journalist. Images are my life.

Joe, you must've felt on top of the world (and probably still do)! I love that Nov 79 wraparound.
I recognize that cover! It was also used for an early edition of Orson Scott Card's book "Capitol." Great cover!
