Raise the Barr

For some reason I receive more comments emailed to me than posted to the blog, and I received a number of them requesting to see more of George Barr's illustrative work for Jack Vance's The Dying Earth, published by Underwood/Miller in 1976.

Well, OK then.

This is great, Thom! I don't know if you're that familiar with Dungeons&Dragons, but Gary Gygax listed Jack Vance as one of the main influences on the design of the game. I had never seen these Barr illustrations before and I love them.
Anyway, I blog on old editons of D&D and one of my favorite things to do is create new "monsters" based on illustrations I find on-line.
Of course, Mr Door Tree is a gold mine of the sort of pulp illustration that the game is based on, but I love your blog as well.
I just recently used one of the H.J.Ford illustrations you put up, and of course, credited The Pictorial Arts and included a link.

You can see what I've done here, http://oldguardgamingaccoutrements.blogspot.com/2009/09/strawman-or-i-know-its-not-real-enemy.html

Thanks for all the great illustrations, Thom!

Well sir, I'm not into D&D myself, but I appreciate notions of strategy and mechanisms of defense, and it's fun to see what you're doing over there. Thanks for the heads up.

Say, have you ever heard of '4000 A.D., an Interstellar Conflict Game'?

No, I'm afraid I'm not familiar with 4000 AD, but there's just so many games out there that I missed the first time, and currently, there's a do-it-yourself renaissance of gamers putting their own works up on the net for free, or for a nominal charge. It's an embaressment of riches out there in the gaming world right now.
